Quenya is the language of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium associated with the High Elves.
Tolkien developed Quenya as one of the major Elvish languages in his mythology. It is based partly on features Tolkien admired in Finnish, Latin, and Greek, although it is an original constructed language rather than a historical language. In the fictional history of Middle-earth, Quenya was associated especially with the Ñoldor and other High Elves.
Quenya appears in names, poetry, songs, ceremonial speech, and historical material throughout Tolkien’s writings. The name “Quenya” is often translated or explained in connection with speech or language, and Tolkien continued refining its grammar and vocabulary for much of his life.
Sindarin is the most important neighboring Elvish language and was more commonly spoken in much of Middle-earth during the events of The Lord of the Rings. Adûnaic belongs to the Men of Númenor, while Khuzdul is the secret language of the Dwarves. These distinctions make Quenya a specific answer rather than a general label for all Elvish speech.
