Quenya is one of Tolkien’s constructed languages and is associated especially with the Ñoldor and other Elves in his mythology. Tolkien drew much of its sound and grammatical character from Finnish, a language he admired after encountering it through the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala.

Quenya was not simply Finnish with invented vocabulary. Tolkien reshaped its structure, sounds, and words while developing it as part of the internal history of the Elvish languages. He also created related languages, including Sindarin, whose principal inspiration was Welsh.

This distinction causes a frequent mix-up: Finnish is the major inspiration for Quenya, while Welsh is the major inspiration for Sindarin. Tolkien’s professional work as a philologist helped him build languages with historical relationships, sound changes, and evolving forms rather than treating them as collections of decorative words.
