Which language family includes Tolkien’s invented language Quenya?

The story behind the answer

Quenya belongs to Tolkien’s family of Elvish languages.

Within Tolkien’s linguistic history, Quenya is associated especially with the High Elves and is related to Sindarin. Tolkien developed Quenya with extensive vocabulary, grammar, and historical changes, rather than treating it as a small collection of decorative words.

Quenya’s structure was influenced in part by languages Tolkien knew, including Finnish and Latin, but it is not Finnish or Latin under another name. In The Lord of the Rings, Quenya often appears in formal, poetic, or historical contexts. Sindarin is another major Elvish language and is more commonly used in spoken dialogue by many Elves in Middle-earth. The broad label “Elvish” is therefore more accurate than identifying Quenya with Dwarvish, Orcish, or the speech of Men.
