Which language did J.R.R. Tolkien create for the High Elves in his legendarium?

The story behind the answer

Quenya is the language J.R.R. Tolkien created for the High Elves in his legendarium.

Tolkien developed Quenya as part of his extensive work in invented languages. Its sounds and structure were influenced especially by Finnish, while its historical development within the stories reflects the movement and separation of Elvish peoples.

In Tolkien’s fictional history, Quenya was associated with the Elves who went to Aman and with the cultural traditions of the Noldor. It remained a prestigious, literary, or ceremonial language in many later settings rather than being the everyday speech of all Elves.

Quenya is often confused with Sindarin, another major Elvish language. Sindarin was more widely spoken in much of Middle-earth during the period of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien also created languages for other peoples, including Adûnaic for the Númenóreans and Khuzdul for the Dwarves.
