J.R.R. Tolkien created Quenya for the Elves known as the High Elves.
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s most developed fictional languages. In his mythology it is associated especially with the Ñoldor and Vanyar, the High Elves who came to Valinor. Tolkien based its sound and structure partly on languages he studied, including Finnish, Latin, and Greek, while giving it its own historical development within Middle-earth.
Quenya appears in names, poems, ceremonial speech, and titles throughout Tolkien’s legendarium. The name “Quenya” itself is connected with the idea of speech or language. It is often presented as an ancient or formal language rather than the everyday speech used by many Elves in later Middle-earth.
The main neighbouring language is Sindarin, which was more commonly spoken by Elves in much of Middle-earth. Tolkien worked on both languages for decades, so they are not interchangeable names for one tongue.
