Quenya is the Elvish language created by J.R.R. Tolkien and associated especially with the High Elves.
Tolkien developed Quenya as part of his lifelong work in language invention, drawing heavily on the sound and structure of Finnish while also giving it its own history and vocabulary. In his mythology, Quenya was an ancient and prestigious Elvish language connected with the Ñoldor and the Blessed Realm. It appears in names, poetry, songs, and ceremonial speech throughout Tolkien’s writings.
Quenya is sometimes confused with Sindarin, another major Elvish language. Sindarin was more widely spoken by Elves in much of Middle-earth during the events of The Lord of the Rings, whereas Quenya had a more formal or historical role. Tolkien also created languages for other peoples, including Khuzdul for the Dwarves and the Black Speech for Sauron’s servants.
