Which language did J.R.R. Tolkien create as the language of the Elves called the Noldor?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien created Quenya as the language of the Elves called the Noldor.

Quenya is one of Tolkien’s most developed Elvish languages. In the mythology of The Silmarillion, it was associated especially with the Noldor, a group of Elves who lived in Valinor and later returned to Middle-earth. Tolkien modeled aspects of its sound and structure on languages including Finnish.

Quenya remained an important ceremonial and historical language in Middle-earth, while Sindarin became the more widely spoken Elvish language among many Elves in Beleriand and later regions. Tolkien created relationships between these languages as part of a fictional history of language change.

The distinction matters because “Elvish” is not one single language in Tolkien’s legendarium. Quenya and Sindarin are separate languages with different histories. Westron was the Common Speech, and Adûnaic was associated with the Númenóreans.
