J.R.R. Tolkien based Quenya partly on Finnish when creating it. Quenya is one of the major Elvish languages in his legendarium and is associated especially with the High Elves.
Tolkien was a professional philologist, so Quenya was designed with substantial grammar, vocabulary, and historical development rather than as a simple collection of invented words. Finnish influenced its sound and structure, while Greek and Latin also contributed inspiration.
Sindarin is another major Elvish language, but Tolkien based much of its phonological character on Welsh. Khuzdul is the language of the Dwarves, and the Black Speech is associated with Mordor.
Quenya appears in names, poetry, formal speech, and inscriptions throughout Tolkien’s mythology. Its role resembles a classical or ceremonial language within the cultures of Middle-earth.
