Which landmark was completed in Paris for the 1889 Exposition Universelle?
Answer
Eiffel Tower
Answer
Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris for the 1889 Exposition Universelle.
The tower was designed by the engineering company of Gustave Eiffel and built between 1887 and 1889. It marked the centenary of the French Revolution and served as the entrance arch to Paris’s international exposition.
The iron structure was assembled from more than 18,000 individual metallic parts joined by millions of rivets. At about 300 metres, it became the world’s tallest man-made structure when completed, surpassing the Washington Monument.
Many artists and writers initially criticized the project, and the tower was intended to be temporary. It survived because of its usefulness for communications, including radio experiments. Its height changes slightly with temperature as the iron expands and contracts.
