What is the world’s oldest continuously operating university, according to UNESCO and university tradition?

The story behind the answer

The University of al-Qarawiyyin is widely regarded as the world’s oldest continuously operating university.

It was founded in 859 CE in Fez, Morocco, by Fatima al-Fihri, who established a mosque and educational institution. Over time, al-Qarawiyyin developed into a major center of Islamic scholarship, teaching subjects that included religion, law, grammar, mathematics, and astronomy. Its library and manuscript collections became important parts of Morocco’s intellectual heritage.

The meaning of “university” depends on historical definitions. Medieval institutions did not always resemble modern universities with standardized degrees, faculties, and administrative structures. Even so, UNESCO and Guinness World Records commonly identify al-Qarawiyyin as the oldest existing, continually operating degree-granting institution.

The University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is generally described as the oldest university in the Western world. Al-Azhar in Cairo was founded later, in the 10th century, and is another historically important Islamic center of learning.
