Which Kenyan exchange began as the Nairobi Stock Exchange in 1954?

The story behind the answer

The Nairobi Securities Exchange began as the Nairobi Stock Exchange in 1954.

The market was established during the colonial period as a voluntary association of stockbrokers. At first, trading was conducted under the rules of the London Stock Exchange, and Kenyan securities activity was closely connected to regional East African commerce.

After Kenya’s independence, the exchange continued developing as the country’s main organized securities market. It changed its name from Nairobi Stock Exchange to Nairobi Securities Exchange in 2011, reflecting a broader range of securities and services. The exchange is headquartered in Nairobi.

Its market includes equities, bonds, derivatives, and real-estate investment products. The NSE 20 Share Index is one of its recognized benchmarks. The exchange should not be confused with a pan-African venue: it is Kenya’s national securities exchange, even though foreign investors can participate under applicable rules.
