Which J.R.R. Tolkien story was first published in 1945 in The Dublin Review?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s story Leaf by Niggle was first published in 1945 in The Dublin Review.

The allegorical tale follows Niggle, a painter who spends years working on a huge picture of a tree. He repeatedly becomes distracted by practical duties and by helping his neighbour Parish. After death, Niggle discovers that the tree he imagined has become real in a larger, more complete world.

The story is often read as a reflection on artistic creation, unfinished work, duty, mortality, and the relationship between imagination and reality. Tolkien’s experience of writing The Lord of the Rings during years of teaching and wartime disruption gives the story an especially relevant biographical context, although it should not be treated as a simple autobiography.

Leaf by Niggle is much shorter and more overtly allegorical than Tolkien’s major Middle-earth narratives. It was later collected in Tree and Leaf, where it appeared alongside Tolkien’s essay “On Fairy-Stories.”
