Which jockey holds the record for the most Epsom Derby wins, with nine victories?
Answer
Lester Piggott
Answer
Lester Piggott
Lester Piggott holds the record for the most Epsom Derby wins, with nine victories.
Piggott’s first Derby victory came aboard Crepello in 1957, and his ninth came aboard Teenoso in 1983. His wins spanned more than two decades and included victories for several prominent trainers and owners. The achievement remains one of the defining records of his career.
The Epsom Derby is one of Britain’s most prestigious races and is run over about one and a half miles for three-year-old colts and fillies, although fillies rarely compete. Its undulating course and famous Tattenham Corner make positioning and balance especially important.
Piggott was also known for his distinctive crouched riding style and won the British flat jockeys’ championship 11 times. His Derby total is sometimes confused with jockey records in other Classics, which are separate statistics.
