Lumos is the J.K. Rowling-founded charity that supports children affected by poverty and social inequality.
Rowling established the charity in 2005 under the name Children’s High Level Group. It was renamed Lumos in 2010, taking its name from a light-producing spell in the Harry Potter stories. The organization campaigns for children’s rights and works to end the institutionalization of children, promoting family- and community-based care instead.
Lumos focuses internationally, including work with governments, professionals, families, and communities. Its approach is based on the idea that children should grow up in safe family settings whenever possible rather than in large residential institutions. It is distinct from Rowling’s charitable work through Volant, which supports causes including multiple sclerosis research and social welfare.
