Which J.K. Rowling charity book contains fairy tales including “The Tale of the Three Brothers”?

The story behind the answer

The Tales of Beedle the Bard contains “The Tale of the Three Brothers.”

The 2007 book is presented as a collection of wizarding fairy tales attributed to the fictional storyteller Beedle the Bard. Its five stories include “The Wizard and the Hopping Pot,” “The Fountain of Fair Fortune,” “The Warlock's Hairy Heart,” “Babbitty Rabbitty and Her Cackling Stump,” and “The Tale of the Three Brothers.”

The last tale is especially important in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows because it explains the origin of the Deathly Hallows: the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility. Hermione receives a copy of the book in the novel and translates its runes.

Rowling originally produced seven handwritten copies of the book. Six went to people closely connected with the series, while the seventh was auctioned for charity. A commercial edition followed, with proceeds supporting children in need.
