Which J.K. Rowling book was adapted as the first Fantastic Beasts film?

The story behind the answer

The first Fantastic Beasts film was adapted from J.K. Rowling’s book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Rowling originally published Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2001 as a companion book to the Harry Potter series. Presented as a Hogwarts textbook by Newt Scamander, it describes magical creatures and includes humorous notes attributed to Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

For the 2016 film, Rowling used the title and created a new story centered on Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne. The film is set decades before Harry Potter’s school years and expands the Wizarding World beyond Britain. The companion book and film share a title and creature-focused theme, but they are not the same narrative.
