Which jazz trumpeter led the 1958 album Milestones?

The story behind the answer

Miles Davis led the 1958 jazz album Milestones. The album was recorded for Columbia Records in February and March 1958 and features Davis with Cannonball Adderley on alto saxophone, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. It is one of the important transitional recordings in Davis’s career.

Milestones helped Davis move beyond the hard-bop sound of his earlier work. The title track is especially notable for its modal approach, which points toward the landmark album Kind of Blue recorded the following year. The record also includes “Dr. Jekyll,” “Two Bass Hit,” and “Billy Boy.”

A common mix-up is confusing Milestones with Davis’s 1959 album Kind of Blue. Both albums feature Coltrane, but Milestones came first and has a different lineup and musical focus. Davis was both the trumpeter and the bandleader on the 1958 session.
