Which jazz pianist led the 1963 album The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady?

The story behind the answer

Charles Mingus led the 1963 album The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady.

The album was released by Impulse! Records in 1963 and is credited to bassist and composer Charles Mingus. Although Mingus is not the pianist who dominates the recording, he directed the ensemble and shaped the composition, arranging, and performance. The musicians included trumpeter Rolf Ericson, trombonist Quentin Warren, alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano, and drummer Dannie Richmond.

The work is presented as a single extended composition divided into six movements. Its dense writing combines blues, jazz, gospel, and modernist elements, while the band moves through sharply contrasting tempos and textures. Mingus’s then-wife, Sue Mingus, wrote the album’s psychological analysis in the liner notes under the name “The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady.”

The title can lead listeners to classify the release as a conventional song collection, but it is better understood as a large-scale suite. It is also sometimes confused with Mingus Ah Um, his other landmark album from the period, released in 1959.
