Which jazz drummer led the 1963 album Out to Lunch!?

The story behind the answer

Eric Dolphy led the 1963 album Out to Lunch!.

Released by Blue Note Records in 1964, Out to Lunch! was Dolphy’s only album as a leader for the label and his final completed studio album. He played alto saxophone, flute, and bass clarinet, while the ensemble included Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone, Richard Davis on bass, and Tony Williams on drums.

The album is known for its adventurous compositions, shifting meters, unusual timbres, and flexible interaction among the musicians. Although Dolphy was a reed player rather than a drummer, “led” means he directed the session and supplied the compositions and central musical concept.

Dolphy died in June 1964, shortly after the album’s release. Out to Lunch! subsequently became one of the landmark recordings associated with the avant-garde jazz movement and Blue Note’s adventurous 1960s catalog.
