The UK programme Dragons' Den was inspired by the Japanese television business format Money Tigers.
Money Tigers established the central structure in which entrepreneurs present business ideas to wealthy investors and seek funding in return for ownership. The UK adaptation preserves that basic dramatic setup while using British entrepreneurs, investors and commercial terminology.
The format is often associated globally with Dragons' Den because that title became especially successful in Britain and several other territories. Other countries have used different local names, including Shark Tank in the United States.
The premise is related to real venture-capital pitching, but the television version compresses negotiations into a short, highly edited presentation. The result combines entrepreneurship education with entertainment and makes valuation and equity accessible to a general audience.
