BAPE is the Japanese streetwear brand known for its shark hoodie design.
BAPE, short for A Bathing Ape, became especially famous for full-zip hoodies whose hoods feature a shark-mouth graphic. The design can cover much of the wearer’s face when the hood is zipped closed, giving the garment a distinctive and theatrical appearance.
The brand was founded in Tokyo by Nigo and became a major force in Japanese and international streetwear. Alongside the shark motif, BAPE is associated with its ape head logo, Baby Milo character, camouflage patterns, and limited releases.
The shark hoodie is not the same thing as BAPE’s general camouflage pattern or Baby Milo character. Those are separate visual elements from the same brand. The design has also appeared in many colorways and collaborations, but the brand most directly identified with it is BAPE.
