Which Japanese stock exchange, founded in 1878, is the country’s largest securities market?
Answer
Tokyo Stock Exchange
Answer
Tokyo Stock Exchange
The Tokyo Stock Exchange is the Japanese stock exchange founded in 1878 that became the country’s largest securities market.
It began operations as the Tokyo Kabushiki Torihikijo during Japan’s Meiji era, when the government was building modern financial institutions. The exchange was reorganized several times during the twentieth century and was closed temporarily during the Second World War.
In 1949, it was re-established under Japan’s postwar securities-market framework. Today, the Tokyo Stock Exchange is operated by Japan Exchange Group and is based in Tokyo. Its market is divided into Prime, Standard, and Growth sections, introduced in 2022.
A common mix-up is confusing the Tokyo Stock Exchange with Japan Exchange Group: the former is the trading venue, while the latter is the parent company that also operates other Japanese markets, including Osaka Exchange.
