Which Japanese manga series by Jun Mochizuki is titled Pandora Hearts?

The story behind the answer

Pandora Hearts is the Japanese manga series created by Jun Mochizuki.

The series was serialized by Square Enix in Monthly Gangan Fantasy from 2006 to 2015 and collected in 24 tankōbon volumes. Its protagonist is Oz Vessalius, a noble teenager whose coming-of-age ceremony is interrupted when he is condemned to the Abyss. He later becomes involved with Alice, a mysterious Chain known as the B-Rabbit.

Pandora Hearts uses the name Pandora as part of its supernatural setting, but it is not a retelling of Hesiod’s myth. The story combines fantasy, mystery, gothic imagery, and references to Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Its title and terminology therefore connect several literary traditions rather than presenting the ancient Greek episode directly.

The manga received an anime adaptation that aired in 2009. The adaptation covers only part of the manga’s full story, so readers and viewers may encounter different plot resolutions depending on the version. Jun Mochizuki’s authorship is the key identifying fact for the series.
