Which Italian driver won the 1952 and 1953 Formula One World Championships?

The story behind the answer

The Italian driver who won the 1952 and 1953 Formula One World Championships was Alberto Ascari.

Ascari drove for Ferrari and became the first Italian to win the World Drivers’ Championship. His 1952 campaign was especially dominant: driving the Ferrari 500 under that season’s Formula Two-based regulations, he took the title with a series of commanding victories and remarkable consistency.

He continued that form into 1953, becoming the first driver to win the championship in consecutive seasons. Ascari also began 1953 with three more championship victories, extending a remarkable run of nine straight championship wins when Indianapolis results are excluded from the sequence.

Ascari is sometimes confused with Nino Farina, another Italian champion who won the inaugural 1950 title. Luigi Fagioli was also a famous Italian Grand Prix racer, but he never won the drivers’ championship. Ascari’s career ended tragically in 1955 when he died during practice for the Monaco Grand Prix, aged 36.
