Which island is the smallest of the four Greater Antilles?
Answer
Puerto Rico
Answer
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is the smallest of the four Greater Antilles islands.
The Greater Antilles are the large island group in the northern Caribbean consisting of Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico has an area of about 9,104 square kilometres, making it much smaller than Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Cuba.
Despite its smaller size, Puerto Rico has a large population and important regional cities. San Juan, founded in 1521 as San Juan Bautista, is the island’s capital and largest city. Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, rather than a sovereign country.
The island’s name can cause confusion because “Puerto Rico” can refer both to the main island and to the broader territory, which includes smaller nearby islands such as Vieques and Culebra. The four Greater Antilles are distinct from the Lesser Antilles, the arc of smaller islands farther east and south.
