Which volcano forms the highest point on Martinique in the Caribbean?
Answer
Mount Pelée
Answer
Mount Pelée
Mount Pelée is the volcano that forms the highest point on Martinique in the Caribbean.
The stratovolcano rises to about 1,397 metres in northern Martinique. Its name is permanently linked to the catastrophic eruption of 8 May 1902, when a fast-moving hot cloud destroyed Saint-Pierre, then Martinique’s major city, and killed roughly 28,000 people.
Mount Pelée remains an active volcano, although it is closely monitored. The 1902 disaster helped scientists recognize the danger of pyroclastic flows and surges, which can move rapidly down volcanic slopes and overwhelm settlements.
Mount Pelée is sometimes confused with La Grande Soufrière on Guadeloupe or Soufrière Hills on Montserrat, both also important Lesser Antilles volcanoes. Those are separate volcanoes on separate islands. Martinique’s highest summit is specifically Mount Pelée.
