Which island is the largest in The Bahamas by land area?

The story behind the answer

Andros is the largest island in The Bahamas by land area.

Andros covers about 5,957 square kilometres and is also the largest island in the Bahamas archipelago. It lies west of Nassau and is known for extensive wetlands, pine forests, mangrove creeks, and the Andros Barrier Reef.

Andros is sometimes confused with New Providence because Nassau, the national capital and largest population centre, is on New Providence. Grand Bahama is also a prominent Bahamian island because of Freeport, but it is considerably smaller than Andros.

The island is not one compact landmass in everyday geography: several large cays and tidal waterways form the Andros island group. Its low population and protected habitats make it especially important for biodiversity, including the West Indian manatee and many bird species.
