Which island is home to the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince?

The story behind the answer

Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, is located on the island of Hispaniola.

Hispaniola is one of the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. Haiti occupies the island’s western portion, while the Dominican Republic occupies its eastern portion. Port-au-Prince sits on Haiti’s Gulf of Gonâve coast and serves as the country’s political and economic center.

The city was founded by French colonists in the eighteenth century and became Haiti’s capital after the Haitian Revolution. Haiti declared independence from France on 1 January 1804, becoming the first independent nation in Latin America and the Caribbean established by a successful slave revolt.

Hispaniola is distinct from Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico, the other major Greater Antilles. Its name is associated with the Spanish colonial period, when the island was called La Española.
