Which island is home to Saint Lucia’s twin volcanic peaks, the Pitons?
Answer
Saint Lucia
Answer
Saint Lucia
Saint Lucia is home to the twin volcanic peaks called the Pitons.
Gros Piton and Petit Piton rise on Saint Lucia’s southwestern coast near Soufrière. The dramatic peaks are volcanic plugs formed from solidified magma and are connected by a volcanic ridge called the Piton Mitan. Their steep outlines are one of the island’s most recognisable symbols.
The Pitons Management Area became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. The protected area includes the two peaks, surrounding terrestrial ecosystems and marine environments along the coast.
Gros Piton is the larger of the two peaks, while Petit Piton is the smaller but steeper-looking cone when viewed from some coastal locations. The Pitons are not separate islands; they are volcanic mountains on Saint Lucia’s main island.
