Which is the smallest country to use the Swiss franc as its official currency?

The story behind the answer

Liechtenstein is the smallest country to use the Swiss franc as its official currency.

Liechtenstein adopted the Swiss franc in 1924, following the customs and economic relationship it had established with Switzerland. The franc is issued by Switzerland, not by Liechtenstein, so the principality does not operate an independent national currency.

The country is a small constitutional monarchy in the Alps between Switzerland and Austria. Its area is about 160 square kilometres, and Vaduz is the capital. Liechtenstein’s economy includes manufacturing, financial services, and other specialised industries.

The Swiss franc is also accepted in some nearby areas and is widely associated with Switzerland, which can make Liechtenstein’s currency arrangement easy to overlook. Liechtenstein is not part of Switzerland, however: it is an independent sovereign state with its own government, laws, and membership in international organisations.
