Monaco is the smallest country ever to win the Eurovision Song Contest.
Monaco won Eurovision in 1971 with Séverine performing “Un banc, un arbre, une rue.” The victory was Monaco's only Eurovision win, and it came before the contest expanded to include many of its current participating countries. Monaco is a sovereign city-state on the French Riviera with an area of about 2.02 square kilometres.
The winning entry was performed in French, one of the contest's historically dominant languages. After its victory, Monaco hosted the 1972 contest in Monte Carlo. The principality later withdrew from Eurovision for long periods and returned to the competition in 2024.
Monaco is sometimes confused with Luxembourg, Malta or San Marino when comparing small Eurovision countries. Those states have also participated successfully, but Monaco is smaller in territory than each of them and remains the contest's smallest winning country.
