Which investment bank merged with J.P. Morgan in 2000 to form JPMorgan Chase?

The story behind the answer

Chase Manhattan Bank merged with J.P. Morgan in 2000 to form JPMorgan Chase.

The merger joined two major American banking traditions. J.P. Morgan traced its history to the nineteenth-century financial business associated with J. Pierpont Morgan, while Chase Manhattan had grown through a long series of New York banking mergers and expansions.

The transaction created J.P. Morgan Chase, which later adopted the styling JPMorgan Chase. The combined company brought investment banking, commercial banking, asset management, and consumer banking activities under one corporate group. It subsequently expanded again through the 2004 merger with Bank One.

The name can cause confusion because J.P. Morgan and Chase remain prominent but distinct consumer-facing brands within the same corporation. J.P. Morgan is strongly associated with institutional and wealth-management services, while Chase is widely known for consumer and commercial banking. The 2000 merger was not the same event as JPMorgan's 2008 acquisition of Bear Stearns.
