Which inventor patented the Jacquard loom, an automated weaving machine controlled by punched cards, in 1804?

The story behind the answer

Joseph Marie Jacquard patented the Jacquard loom, an automated weaving machine controlled by punched cards, in 1804.

The loom used cards with patterns of holes to control which warp threads were lifted during weaving. This allowed complex designs to be reproduced more efficiently and with less manual pattern-setting than earlier methods.

Jacquard built on earlier work by inventors including Basile Bouchon, Jean-Baptiste Falcon, and Jacques de Vaucanson. His 1804 system became the best-known version and was widely adopted in textile manufacturing.

The punched-card control mechanism later influenced Charles Babbage’s ideas for the Analytical Engine, while Ada Lovelace recognized that similar principles could handle more than numerical operations. The Jacquard loom is therefore an important predecessor of programmable machines.
