Who invented the first successful powered airplane, making the Wright brothers' 1903 flight possible?
Answer
The Wright brothers
Answer
The Wright brothers
The Wright brothers invented the first successful powered airplane, making their 1903 flight possible.
Wilbur and Orville Wright, bicycle manufacturers from Dayton, Ohio, developed a practical system combining aerodynamic control, a lightweight engine, and a propeller designed from their own calculations. Their earlier glider experiments at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, helped them solve the problem of controlling an aircraft in three dimensions.
On December 17, 1903, Orville piloted the first powered flight at Kitty Hawk. The aircraft flew for 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. Wilbur made the longest flight that day, lasting 59 seconds and covering 852 feet.
The Wrights are sometimes confused with other aviation pioneers because several people made important early flights. Their distinction rests on achieving controlled, sustained, powered flight and later developing a practical aircraft through repeated testing.
