Who invented the piano in Florence around 1700, creating an instrument with both soft and loud dynamics?
Answer
Bartolomeo Cristofori
Answer
Bartolomeo Cristofori
Bartolomeo Cristofori invented the piano in Florence around 1700, creating an instrument with both soft and loud dynamics.
Cristofori worked for Prince Ferdinando de' Medici of Tuscany and designed a keyboard instrument whose hammers struck strings instead of plucking them. This mechanism allowed players to control volume through touch, unlike the harpsichord, which generally produced a more uniform sound.
The earliest surviving Cristofori pianos date from 1720. His original name for the instrument was gravicèmbalo col piano e forte, meaning a harpsichord with soft and loud. The shorter word piano eventually became standard.
People sometimes attribute the piano to later German builders because they made important improvements and helped popularize it. However, Cristofori's hammer-action design established the essential principle of the modern piano.
