Which inventor created the first electric battery, demonstrated in 1800 as the voltaic pile?

The story behind the answer

Alessandro Volta created the first electric battery, demonstrated in 1800 as the voltaic pile.

Volta built the pile by stacking alternating discs of zinc and copper, separated by cloth or cardboard soaked in saltwater. This arrangement produced a continuous electric current, unlike earlier experiments that generated only brief static charges or impulses.

The battery was a major advance because it gave scientists a dependable source of electricity for experiments. Volta’s work also inspired the word “volt,” the SI unit of electric potential.

A common mix-up is crediting Luigi Galvani, whose animal-electricity experiments influenced Volta. Galvani did not create the first continuous chemical battery; Volta did.
