Which inventor created the first commercially successful revolver, the Colt revolver, in the 1830s?

The story behind the answer

Samuel Colt created the first commercially successful revolver, the Colt revolver, in the 1830s. Its defining feature was a rotating cylinder that carried several cartridges and aligned each one with the barrel before firing.

Colt received a U.S. patent for a revolving firearm in 1836 and founded the Patent Arms Manufacturing Company in Paterson, New Jersey. Early sales were limited, but the design gained attention through military contracts and private purchases. Colt later established a major factory in Hartford, Connecticut.

The revolver was not the first firearm with a rotating chamber. Earlier designs, including Elisha Collier’s flintlock revolver, had already used the concept. Colt’s contribution was to combine a practical repeating system with industrial manufacturing, interchangeable parts, and aggressive commercial promotion.

Colt firearms became associated with westward expansion and the American Civil War, although popular stories often simplify their history. The company produced several models, including the 1847 Walker and the 1873 Single Action Army. Colt’s success helped transform firearms production into a modern mass-manufacturing industry.
