Which institution selects the Nobel Prize in Literature laureate?
Answer
The Swedish Academy
Answer
The Swedish Academy
The Swedish Academy selects the Nobel Prize in Literature laureate.
King Gustav III founded the Swedish Academy in Stockholm in 1786, creating an institution devoted to advancing the Swedish language and literature. Alfred Nobel’s will assigned the Literature Prize to this academy.
The academy has traditionally consisted of 18 members, often called the “De Aderton,” meaning “the Eighteen.” Its Nobel Committee evaluates nominations and prepares recommendations before the academy makes the final decision.
The Swedish Academy is distinct from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which selects laureates in physics, chemistry, and economic sciences. The Nobel Foundation manages the prize finances and administration but does not choose the Literature laureate.
