Which Indonesian exchange did the 2007 merger of the Jakarta and Surabaya exchanges create?
Answer
Indonesia Stock Exchange
Answer
Indonesia Stock Exchange
The 2007 merger of Indonesia’s Jakarta and Surabaya exchanges created the Indonesia Stock Exchange.
Before consolidation, Indonesia’s securities trading was divided between the Jakarta Stock Exchange and the Surabaya Stock Exchange. The Jakarta venue had become the country’s dominant equities market, while Surabaya had its own exchange operations and historical role. Combining them created one national institution for Indonesian exchange trading.
The resulting Indonesia Stock Exchange is commonly called IDX and is based in Jakarta. It supports listings and trading in Indonesian securities and publishes market information used by domestic and international investors.
The merger should not be confused with the Jakarta Composite Index, which is a benchmark calculated from listed Indonesian shares. The index did not become an exchange; rather, it is one of the indicators associated with the unified market. The institutional change was the creation of IDX itself.
