The Indonesian e-commerce company that merged with Gojek to form GoTo in 2021 was Tokopedia.
Tokopedia was founded in 2009 by William Tanuwijaya and Leontinus Alpha Edison. It developed as an online marketplace connecting Indonesian merchants with consumers, helping smaller businesses sell products across the country. By the late 2010s, it had become one of Indonesia’s most important technology startups and reached unicorn status.
Gojek began as a transportation and delivery company, but the two businesses had already collaborated before merging. Gojek drivers, for example, supported delivery services for Tokopedia orders. On May 17, 2021, the companies announced the completion of their combination under the new holding company GoTo, a name formed from Gojek and Tokopedia and also echoing gotong royong, an Indonesian idea of mutual cooperation.
Traveloka, Blibli, and Bukalapak are all recognizable Indonesian or regional digital-commerce names, but none is the answer to this merger question. GoTo combined e-commerce with ride-hailing, food delivery, payments, and other financial services. Tokopedia remained the group’s e-commerce business, although its ownership structure later changed through a transaction involving TikTok’s parent company.
