Magento was originally developed by Varien Inc., a U.S. software company that had previously worked with the osCommerce shopping-cart platform. Varien considered building on osCommerce but ultimately created Magento from scratch, with help from volunteers and other open-source contributors.
Development began in early 2007, and Magento’s first public beta appeared on August 31, 2007. The first general-availability release followed on March 31, 2008.
