Amazon Go was designed as a convenience-store format where shoppers could enter with an app, take products from shelves, and leave without using a conventional checkout. Cameras, shelf sensors, computer vision, and other systems tracked items and linked them to the shopper’s virtual cart.

Amazon first announced the concept in 2016 and opened the first location to employees in Seattle on December 5, 2016. The store opened to the public on January 22, 2018. Its selection generally included prepared foods, snacks, drinks, meal kits, and limited grocery items. A larger Amazon Go Grocery format followed in 2020.

Amazon Go is often confused with Amazon Fresh, which refers to grocery retail and delivery businesses, and with Amazon Dash, a separate product and service brand. “Just Walk Out” is the name of the checkout technology associated with the stores, not the store chain itself. Amazon closed its remaining Go locations in February 2026.
