Which Indian stock exchange, founded in 1875, is Asia's oldest?
Answer
Bombay Stock Exchange
Answer
Bombay Stock Exchange
The Bombay Stock Exchange, now commonly branded BSE, was founded in 1875 and is Asia's oldest stock exchange.
Its origins trace to a group of brokers who met under banyan trees near Mumbai's Town Hall during the nineteenth century. In 1875, Premchand Roychand and other brokers established the Native Share and Stock Brokers' Association, which later developed into the Bombay Stock Exchange.
The exchange was renamed the Bombay Stock Exchange in 1956 and received permanent recognition under India's Securities Contracts Regulation Act. In 2002, its legal name became BSE Limited, although “Bombay Stock Exchange” remains the widely recognized historical name.
BSE's benchmark Sensex, introduced in 1986, tracks 30 major companies listed on the exchange. A common mix-up is confusing BSE's founding date with that of India's National Stock Exchange, which began operations in the 1990s and was created to modernize nationwide electronic trading.
