Which Indian exchange began trading in 1994 after being founded in 1992?

The story behind the answer

The National Stock Exchange of India began trading in 1994 after being founded in 1992.

The NSE was established as a company promoted by major Indian financial institutions, with the aim of modernising the country’s securities market. It introduced nationwide, screen-based electronic trading rather than relying on a traditional floor-based system.

The exchange’s benchmark NIFTY 50 index tracks 50 large companies listed in India. Its main market is in Mumbai, although its electronic network connects investors and brokers across the country.

A common mix-up is confusing the NSE with the Bombay Stock Exchange, which is older and traces its origins to 1875. The NSE is also not the same as NIFTY 50: the former is the exchange, while the latter is one of its best-known stock indexes.
