Which Inca emperor was executed by the Spanish in 1533?
Answer
Atahualpa
Answer
Atahualpa
The Inca emperor executed by the Spanish in 1533 was Atahualpa.
Atahualpa had recently defeated his half-brother Huáscar in a civil war over the imperial succession when Francisco Pizarro’s Spanish expedition arrived. In November 1532, the Spanish captured Atahualpa in an ambush at Cajamarca, despite his large army and his position as the most powerful ruler in the Andes.
While imprisoned, Atahualpa offered a vast ransom of gold and silver in exchange for his release. The Spanish collected the ransom but continued to hold him. They accused him of treason, conspiracy, and responsibility for Huáscar’s death, then condemned him. Spanish accounts say he was initially sentenced to burning; after accepting baptism, the punishment was changed to death by garrote, or strangulation.
Atahualpa was executed on 26 July 1533. His death weakened the Inca political order, although resistance continued under later rulers including Manco Inca. He is often described as the last effective Inca emperor.
