Which writer authored Comentarios Reales de los Incas, a major account of Inca history?

The story behind the answer

Inca Garcilaso de la Vega authored Comentarios Reales de los Incas, a major account of Inca history.

Born in 1539 in Cusco to a Spanish conquistador father and an Inca noble mother, Garcilaso belonged to the first generation shaped by both Indigenous Andean and Spanish colonial worlds. He later moved to Spain, where he wrote under the name Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and drew on family memories, oral traditions, and earlier written chronicles.

The first part of Comentarios Reales de los Incas was published in Lisbon in 1609. It describes Inca origins, rulers, customs, government, religion, and warfare. A second part, dealing mainly with the Spanish conquest and its aftermath, appeared posthumously in 1617 and is often known as Historia general del Perú.

The work is important but must be read critically. Garcilaso presented an informed, often idealized vision of Inca society, and modern historians compare his account with archaeology and other chronicles. The alternatives were also notable writers or chroniclers, but none authored this particular work.
