Which Inca emperor is credited with building Machu Picchu?

The story behind the answer

Pachacuti is the Inca emperor credited with building Machu Picchu. More precisely, archaeologists generally interpret the site as a royal estate commissioned by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui after his victories in the Urubamba region.

Pachacuti ruled during the 15th century and transformed the small Cusco-based state into a major Andean empire. Machu Picchu appears to have served as a prestigious retreat, ceremonial center, and estate connected to the ruler and his royal lineage. Its terraces, temples, residences, and agricultural areas were integrated into the steep mountain landscape.

The wording “built by Pachacuti” simplifies a more complex history. Construction and occupation likely extended across the reigns of Pachacuti and his successor, Túpac Inca Yupanqui. It is also not a fortress in the narrow sense, nor was it built by the later rulers Atahualpa or Huayna Capac. Manco Cápac belongs to Inca origin traditions and lived centuries earlier.
