Which hurricane struck Kauai during filming of Jurassic Park?

The story behind the answer

Hurricane Iniki struck Kauai during the filming of Jurassic Park.

The hurricane passed directly over Kauai on September 11, 1992, the last scheduled day of the production's three-week exterior shoot there. Steven Spielberg and about 130 cast and crew members took shelter in their hotel while the storm devastated parts of the island.

The production had planned to film additional material on Kauai, including a Gallimimus herd sequence. After Iniki damaged the island, that scene was filmed two weeks later at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu. The storm also affected planned story material involving Ray Arnold, whose death ultimately remained offscreen.

Spielberg used brief footage captured during the hurricane in the finished film to represent the storm striking Isla Nublar. The answer is sometimes confused with famous Atlantic hurricanes such as Andrew or Hugo, but those storms were not the hurricane that interrupted Jurassic Park's Kauai shoot.
