Which horse won the inaugural running of the St Leger Stakes in 1776?
Answer
Allabaculia
Answer
Allabaculia
Allabaculia won the inaugural St Leger Stakes in 1776.
The race was first run at Cantley Common near Doncaster in Yorkshire. It was named after Lieutenant General Anthony St Leger, who helped establish the event. Allabaculia won the first edition, which was contested over a distance different from the modern race.
The St Leger later moved to Doncaster Racecourse and became the final British Classic of the season for three-year-olds. It forms the traditional English Triple Crown alongside the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby. The race is often called the oldest of Britain’s five Classics, although its title as the oldest classic race can depend on how racing events are classified.
