Red Rum won the Grand National three times, in 1973, 1974, and 1977, making him the only horse to achieve that total in the famous Aintree steeplechase.
Bred in Ireland, Red Rum was trained by Ginger McCain and ridden by jockey Tommy Stack for his third Grand National victory. His first two wins came with Brian Fletcher. The 1973 renewal became legendary because Red Rum recovered from a 30-length deficit to catch and defeat Crisp close to the finish.
Red Rum was also runner-up in the Grand National in 1975 and 1976. Those results gave him an extraordinary record across five consecutive runnings of the race, especially considering the demanding fences and long distance.
Tiger Roll later won the Grand National twice, in 2018 and 2019, but he did not match Red Rum’s three victories. Red Rum retired in 1978 and became one of Britain’s best-known racehorses.
